Anthony Steffes

As an experimental artist,  I am interested in playing with mediums, found objects, and just about anything that has pattern or texture to develop layered pieces that challenge the imagination of the viewer.  Inspiration begins with objects and materials that I must possess.  My art process involves purposely creating difficulties, confusing myself and avoiding anything that I can easily control, exactly opposite to the way in which I choose to live.  Visual references from the performing arts, nature, the garden, and prior art experience guide my creative process.  My pieces tend to inspire fantasy, evoke memories, and tempt the viewer to indulge in something not easily defined.

Born in Beausejour, Manitoba, I have spent most of my life learning by teaching visual and performance arts to youth in Manitoba schools.  Happiest when engaged in the process of helping someone do what they think they cannot, I continue to develop programs for talented high school students, as well as offering adult workshops in composition, design and the integrated arts experience.

Formal art training includes the University of Manitoba, University of Toronto, Ontario College of Art, Forum Art Institute, and workshops across Canada and the US with artists who have generously shared their art, knowledge and passion.
