Bill Shoup

Bill Shoup at Culture Days 2013

We were so sorry to hear about the passing of one of our beloved artists, Bill Shoup last month. Every year during Culture Days Bill would come and demonstrate his clay sculpting techniques. His audience so loved to watch him sculpt and chat with him. One of his pieces that were so popular were his bears. Bill was a talented artist, a wonderful teacher and a lovely man. We will miss him greatly.

It is with deep sadness that we tell you of the passing of one our artists, Bela Szajcz, earlier this year. For more than twenty years Béla had created beautiful soapstone sculptures. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends .Béla’s Inukshuks are very popular here in the gallery, being purchased by visitors from all around the globe. He will be missed.

The whimsical works of glass artist Tatiana Gregoryanz have been adorning the windows of Pulse Gallery for several  years and her most recent creations are truly a delight to behold!

 

This latest series of glass panels are 33" high by 25" wide. Each stained glass panel depicts a different place, and the viewer is able to pick out exactly where each scene is here at The Forks. Each panel is created in the traditional stained glass manner. The images are painted on hand cut glass and then kiln fired so that the painting becomes a permanent part of the glass.

The glass that Tatiana used for the border is glass she salvaged from an antique window that she found here at the antique mall in Johnston Terminal.

Splash of Bold

We are very pleased to present Anne Siciliano this month as our guest artist. Anne comes to us from Northwestern Ontario.

Anne's first love is water colours which she started working with in the mid 1990's. In early 2000 Anne started teaching art. Later, she discovered mixed medium and acrylics which opened doors for her to become a much more creative and experiential artist.  Even though Anne loves traditional painting her favorite is mixed medium with an abstract flavor.

We will be showcasing selected works from April 1 to 30 with many more on display on April 29, from 7 to 9 pm at the artist reception. We hope to see you then!

We are pleased to present Gregor Awang as our guest artist in March. We have selected works on display from March 1 to 31 with an artist reception on March 18 from 7 to 9 pm. 

"I’m Gregor Awang, a Winnipeg Artist and Scientist. This dichotomy has influenced my development as an artist, with both analytical and classical influences, as well as experimental approaches. I was drawn to art since I first held a pencil and saw that white pristine wall in my parents’ home as the perfect “canvas”. Mom & Dad gently encouraged me to draw instead on the reams of paper they bought for me. Throughout my life, art has continued to be an irresistible passion that urges me to improve my technique. I’ve learned a lot from other artists over the years and enjoy the sense of sharing and understanding that comes with exchanging concepts and techniques with them.  I like to paint for purely aesthetic reasons or to portray cultural, philosophical, spiritual, natural or scientific ideas. Often my ideas are a blend of what I see around me and what that image can represent. Though some of my work looks like Impressionism, I’m more about using those images to portray an idea. My influences range broadly from the Marvel Comics drawing style to Impressionism to Modernism & Abstract, as well as a fascination with aboriginal art forms from all over the world. In particular Van Gogh, Monet and Gustav Klimt have been big inspirations. I also work in wood and I’m interested in developing myself in the broad area of multi-media techniques. My goal is to become a full time artist in the future when I retire from the world of science. This is me dipping my toes into the artistic ocean!"-- Gregor Awang, Ph.D.
